How to Print a Temperature Tower for PLA Using Orca Slicer

How to Print a Temperature Tower for PLA Using Orca Slicer

Step 1: Download and Install Orca Slicer

Orca Slicer is a powerful, open-source slicing software that offers advanced features and optimizations for 3D printing. Follow these steps to download and install it:

  1. Visit the Official Orca Slicer Website
    • Go to https://github.com/SoftFever/OrcaSlicer.
    • Click on the Releases section to find the latest version.
    • Download the installer compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

  1. Install the Software
    • Run the downloaded installer.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step 2: Configure Orca Slicer for PLA Printing

After installation, you need to configure the slicer to optimize it for your 3D printer and filament type.

  1. Select Your Printer
    • Open Orca Slicer.
    • Click on Machine Settings and add your 3D printer model.
    • If your printer is not listed, select a generic profile and adjust settings manually.

  1. Set Up PLA Filament Profile
    • Go to Filament Settings.
    • Choose PLA or create a new profile.
    • Set the recommended temperatures:
      • Nozzle Temperature: 190°C to 220°C (depends on filament brand).
      • Bed Temperature: 50°C to 60°C (if needed).
      • Fan Speed: 100% for PLA.

  1. Adjust Printing Settings
    • Layer Height: 0.2mm (standard for PLA prints).
    • Print Speed: 60-100mm/s (based on your printer’s capabilities).
    • Retraction: 2-6mm (varies by extruder type).
    • Infill: 20% (for a temperature tower, use 10-15% to save material).

Step 3: Use Orca Slicer’s Built-in Temperature Tower

Orca Slicer has a built-in temperature tower generator, making it easy to print without manual configuration.

  1. Open Orca Slicer and go to Calibration > Temperature Tower.
  2. Select Your Material
    • Choose PLA or the filament type you are testing.
    • The slicer will automatically adjust the temperature steps.

  1. Set the Temperature Range
    • Typically, PLA tests between 220°C and 190°C, decreasing every few layers.
    • Adjust the range if necessary based on your filament.

  1. Click Generate Model
    • Orca Slicer will automatically create and configure the temperature tower.

Step 4: Slice and Print the Temperature Tower

  1. Slice the Model
    • Click Slice to generate the G-code.
    • Review the temperature changes in the preview to ensure they are applied correctly.

  1. Save the G-Code and Start Printing
    • Export the file to an SD card or send it to your printer via Wi-Fi.
    • Start the print and observe how different temperature sections perform.

Step 5: Analyze Results and Choose the Best Temperature

  1. Examine the Finished Tower
    • Look for signs of stringing, rough layers, or weak adhesion.
    • Identify the best-looking section with smooth layers and minimal defects.

  1. Use the Best Temperature for Future Prints
    • Adjust your filament profile in Orca Slicer based on the results.

Conclusion

With Orca Slicer’s built-in temperature tower, testing PLA temperatures is easier than ever. By using this automated feature, you can quickly determine the ideal temperature for your filament, ensuring higher print quality and reduced failures. Happy printing!
